The North Privet Hedge (Ligustrum x ibolium) is America's fastest growing deciduous hedge! They are typically used in large quantities to create a privacy screen that is absolutely unparalleled. Individually they tend to grow in a pyramidal shape, but with yearly shearing they can take on any shape your imagination can fathom. These hedges grow at an extremely fast rate, gaining as much as 3 feet per year in many cases. They are also extremely cold hardy, and can weather many brutal winters for years to come.
Achieve a thicker hedge by planting two rows of shrubs, zig-zag fashion, in a double-wide trench.
Planting: Plant in moderately acid to slightly alkaline soil ranging between 6.0 to 8.0 on the pH scale. Most average garden soils fall between a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0.
Watering: Young privets will require some water to establish roots. Once established, most varieties are exceptionally drought tolerant. Like most ornamental plants, privet will not tolerate wet soil conditions like standing water. Such conditions can lead to root rot and other harmful plant diseases.
Fertilizer: Fertilize in the spring with a slow-release shrub & tree food, preferably one that contains Sulfur and/or Iron.
Pruning: Light pruning can be performed any time of year. Shearing can be performed any time of year, up to two months prior to the average first frost date in your area. Heavy pruning to reduce the size (height/width) or to achieve tree-form should be done while dormant.
Width: 4-6'
